Top 5 End of the Year Shopping Facts

November 27, 2017

The holiday spending frenzy doesn’t end when the holidays do. Consumers have gift cards to spend and after-Christmas sales to shop.

We are listing our top 5 end of the year shopping statistics. All data is from 2016 and 2017.

#1: Holiday gift shopping continues after Christmas.

About 5% of consumers buy their last gift after Christmas Day. Five percent of the US population is over 16 million people. That’s a lot of people who delay the present-purchasing process.

#2: Gift cards are the most popular gift request.

61% of consumers wanted gift cards in 2016, making it the #1 gift request but only 56% of shoppers planned to buy gift cards. The top 5 gift cards shoppers planned to buy: restaurant, department store, credit card gift card, coffee shop and entertainment.

#3: Millennials will be shopping post-Christmas sales.

About 80% of Millennials plan to shop post-holiday sales and over 2/3 of all consumers will. Millennials are increasingly spending their money on experiences rather than on stuff.

#4: Most shoppers are in a store while they check for the best price.

Most shoppers do comparative price checks before buying something while still in a brick-and-mortar store. 39% of consumers are willing to travel to another store to see if they can find the item at a cheaper price. Two-thirds of all shoppers check prices on their phone before making a purchase (called “webrooming”).

#5: 7 in 10 shoppers expect holiday discounts.

70% of consumers expect markdowns of 31% or more during the 2016 holiday season. Coupons and promotions influenced 77% of last year’s shoppers.
